Designing shopper engagement

Shopkick pays attention to the unglamorous middle of shopping: walking in, picking something up, scanning it. The design had to make that middle feel worth it.

Context

Rewards along the whole path to purchase

Shopkick connects digital and physical retail. Beacons and rewards cover walking into a store, scanning a product, browsing, and buying — in store and online. As a production designer I made in-app campaigns with major retailers and brands so members had a reason to choose a specific product.

A campaign unit built for the app, not resized from a billboard.

Approach

A system of touches, not a single ad

Email banners announced partner launches — Torrid among them — and pulled loyal shoppers into contests and high-kick dates. In-app promo units carried lookbooks: recipes, nutrition, how to use a product, plus video for anything new.

Banners pushed shelf scans. Kicks landed when someone bought and scanned a receipt, or simply walked into a partner store. Web views inside the app acted as roadmaps for limited-time offers, with dates visible so the urgency was factual.

Promotions that state the offer, the window, and the action.
In-app units sized for the phone, where the kicks are actually earned.

Outcome

Design in service of a scan

The measure was commercial and concrete: more product moving in store and online. Every asset — email, lookbook, promo, web view — had to survive contact with a person who is already standing in an aisle.
